Cap & Trade – Saving The Planet or The End of Independence?

by Rich Carey on July 3, 2009

Al Gore - Genius, Liar, or both?

This past week, the House of Representatives hastily passed  HR 2454, also known as the Cap and Trade Bill.  This bill is a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by requiring manufacturing companies to accrue buyable, sellable credits for all the greenhouse gases they produce. The end goal of the legislation as it stands now is to reduce carbon emissions to 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020.  This is only the beginning of a massive change in energy policies and environmental laws that will affect every household in America in very dramatic ways.  If passed by the Senate, this bill will absolutely change your lifestyle.  You will not have a choice.

This sounds like a great idea – after all, everyone knows that the planet is destined for certain destruction if the industrialized nations continue to spew out carbon dioxide.  The polar icecaps are melting, ocean levels are rising, and it’s well established science that man-made C02 is the cause.  Right?

I mean, Al Gore created a movie with big fancy charts and graphs and tons of scientific evidence to support this idea.  This video has been shown to school children everywhere, and everyone knows it’s fact.   Al Gore has declared that the debate is over.  To deny this is to deny that the earth is round.  Al Gore wouldn’t lie to us, would he?

Being a card-carrying member of the Al Gore Flat Earth Society, I’ve been more than a little skeptical about all this Global Warming thing.  I wrote to my Senator (Bill Nelson, FL) to encourage him not to vote for this legislation when it comes to the Senate later this year.  He was kind enough to respond:

June 30, 2009

Dear Mr. Carey:

Thank you for contacting me regarding cap-and-trade legislation.

I am interested in cap-and-trade programs because they would let
the market, not the government, dictate how to lower harmful
emissions. I believe that we have the technology and ability to
meet the challenge of climate change in a way that will provide
new economic opportunities and make us more competitive
internationally while protecting consumers from high energy
prices and breaking our dependence on oil.

Global warming threatens Florida's fragile ecosystem and $56
billion tourism industry. Rising sea levels will encroach on
Florida's pristine beaches and harm coastal wetlands and the
Everglades. Increased carbon dioxide and water temperatures
will damage sensitive coral reefs and endanger Florida's
diverse marine species. A scientific study by the Intergovern-
mental Panel on Climate Change concluded with 90 percent
certainty that global warming is caused by the accumulation
of man-made greenhouse gasses.

On June 26, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 2454, the
American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. The Senate is
expected to consider legislation to address energy independence
and climate change in the fall.

I will continue to work in the Senate to fight the effects of
global warming. I appreciate your taking the time to share your
thoughts with me, and I respect your views. Please feel free to
regarding any additional issues of concern.

Sincerely,Senator Bill Nelson

Well, it looks like he’s standing on some pretty solid ground here. “the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded with 90 percent certainty that global warming is caused by the accumulation of man-made greenhouse gasses.” That is a pretty strong statement, made by some very important-sounding people.

I decided that I’d better do more research. After all, the IPCC, part of the United Nations, was pretty dang sure that global warming is our fault, and they shared the Nobel Peace Prize with none other than Al Gore himself.  Coincidentally, this week a nice guy from Sweden sent me a copy of the IPCC’s latest findings (via Twitter) because he didn’t want me to be a deceived flat-earth guy.

I read the report, which pretty much maintains that their earlier reports were correct in their assertions about man-made greenhouse gases causing Global Warming, except things are much worse than they thought previously, and immediate action by the major industrialized nations could only barely slow down the fiery doom that awaits our planet.  They included lots more charts and graphs, but curiously, scientific evidence to support their assertions that man-made C02 was the cause for all this destruction was completely lacking.  One would think that would be an important detail, especially since they have asserted that this is a “90% certainty” and if this is not true, their entire existence is not only unnecessary, but all their activities could be considered fraudulent.

Their call for action was.. guess what – carbon-credits and cap and trade legislation to force up energy prices for conventional sources in industrialized nations in order to force people to use more expensive, “green” technologies.  Even though China and India (2 of the largest produces of greenhouse gasses) are paying no attention to the IPCC, it appears that many in Washington are listening pretty closely.

Nancy Pelosi and Henry Waxman (both Democrats from California) think this is pretty important stuff, given the way they pushed this 1.6 TRILLION DOLLAR legislation through without allowing time to actually read through the 1600+ page bill before taking time off to celebrate our nation’s INDEPENDENCE.  Hey, California’s environmental/economic policies have been working out really well lately, right?

Well, by now you have seen through my thinly veiled sarcasm. Let me cut to the bottom line.  Cap and Trade is nothing more than a massive tax increase. Correction – it is more.  It is yet another power and money grab by multi-national corporations who stand to make BILLIONS selling you products and services based on “green” technology, all under the guise of saving the planet.   It is also the biggest erosion of our national sovereignty and personal liberty in the history of America. This is all being done based upon the premise that man-made C02 is the cause behind Global Warming.

But what if they are wrong? What if Global Warming is not caused by man-made greenhouse gasses?  What if the people who created this report that is relied upon by our politicians were not honest, truth-seeking scientists, but rather political activists from other nations who want to control America from the outside?

Folks, please take the time to do your own research on this subject. The politicians who support this idea are either a) grossly and willfully ignorant of the facts, or b) part of an ongoing conspiracy to centralize global power and destroy our national sovereignty. I am not given to conspiracy theories, but after all that has happened this year with the bailouts, the stimulus, Cap and Trade, and (sigh) nationalized health care, I’m sorry to report that I’ve become a believer.  I’m convinced that there is a conspiracy, and there is ample evidence everywhere if one is only willing to look around a bit.  I don’t know how deep it runs, but the waters are running very deep in Washington D.C. this year.

If you believe that man is causing Global Warming, or even if you believe that C02 is bad for our planet, please invest your time and watch this video. You’ll hear from reputable scientists and climatologists, who provide ample evidence that the debate is no only far from over; that it’s based on completely flawed arguments.

Don’t be snookered, and don’t allow this deception on Capital Hill to invade your home, your bank account, and your life.  Freedom is what is at stake here; make no mistake about it.  The only thing standing between this expensive erosion of your liberty and the destruction your freedom to choose your lifestyle is the U.S. Senate. Write, call, badger, cajole, threaten or whatever, but do everything in your power to communicate to your Senators that if they vote for this bill, they are serving their last term.  I told Sen. Bill Nelson (D – FL) that if he voted for this bill, I would do everything in my power to see that his is defeated in the next election. And I will, that’s a promise.

To remain silent on this issue, is to risk losing something that may never be recoverable in our lifetime, or maybe ever.  Tomorrow is Independence Day.  Don’t let the blood of those who died for your liberty have given their lives in vain.  Watch this, and share this post with your friends and neighbors.  This is serious stuff.
